It seems an internet presence is necessary to fulfill one’s entrepreneurial destiny, and so, here at last is the glorious blog of abex ink. If all goes according to loose plan, an actual website will be forthcoming. But until then, and until a company logo is decided upon, this will have to suffice. Keep in mind that this blog is an unedited, unfiltered conversation, between us, and not an exact representation of formal abex anything…in other words, your finished product would be shinier, and without random ellipses, typos, and rambling. abex ink, my accidental company, was named after my grandfather’s machine shop which he opened in San Francisco in 1943, calling “A-Bex Products Company”, incorporating our last name, Beck, and adding an “A” in front to ensure top billing in the phone book, or so I’m told. The A-Bex machine shop sponsored an A-Bex basketball team that my Dad, Uncles, and family friends played on. I remember going to watch them play when I was a kid, spending the bulk of my time playing under the pull-out bleachers in the gym with my sisters and other kids. Later my Dad used the name A-Bex for the annual golf tournament he organized for his buddies in Reno/Tahoe. This tournament is going approaching its 25 year I believe. I respectfully chose the name abex to honor my family, adding “ink”to specify the writing element and also to leave the name open to other uses. One never knows which Beck will start something next. I myself had been doing the odd editing or copywriting job for several years. Then as fate deemed, I was unexpectedly laid off from my cubicle job in late 2006. To my astonishment, at that same time, there was a rapid influx in the freelance work I was being offered. I decided to ride that wave as long ass possible to see where it lead–not to mention to avoid returning to a new cubicle and having another human designated as “boss.” ( Anyone who knows me knows I’m not a fan of hierarchy, more of a round-table gal.) When it appeared that the work was not going to slow down anytime soon, I realized I would need to start treating my consulting work as a real business. So I decided on a name for the business on March 14th, 2007, abex ink filed for a tax ID number. I consider this the official date of inception for the business, even though I had been working these side jobs here and there since 2003. I think it wasn’t until I had no “real job” and depended solely on the work I was doing on my own that I believed I could manage a business of my own. Of course it is still in its infancy, has no business plan, and the kinks are being worked out constantly. But I have been given an opportunity to travel, grow, learn, and reflect because of divine intervention that has taken place on my behalf during the most challenging times.
